Custom Terminations For NZ's Largest BESS Project

26 August 2026

Large infrastructure projects rarely fit neatly into an off-the-shelf solution.

During construction of the Ruakākā Battery Energy Storage System, the project required a range of custom termination components to suit the battery connection requirements and installation process.

ECL worked with the project team to supply custom long barrel, long palm lugs manufactured to the required dimensions, including specific hole sizing and hole centres.

Rather than asking installers to sort and prepare hundreds of individual components on site, ECL also supplied the project using its EZConnect system, with products packaged and labelled according to each installation location.

This reduced handling on site, simplified installation and helped eliminate unnecessary errors.

Pre-cut heatshrink was also supplied to reduce waste and save time.

While the products themselves were important, the real value came from understanding how the installation would be carried out in the field.

On projects of this scale, small inefficiencies multiplied across hundreds of terminations can quickly become significant costs in labour and the overall programme.

By working with the contractor and engineering team early, ECL was able to provide a solution that simplified installation and ensured the required components were delivered ready for use.

The project is a good example of where customisation can add real value. Sometimes the challenge isn't finding a lug or connector. It's finding one that fits the equipment, suits the installation method and allows the job to be completed efficiently.

As battery storage, solar and other renewable projects continue to grow across New Zealand and Australia, we're seeing more demand for custom termination solutions, pre-packaged installation systems and project-specific engineering support.

If you've got a project where standard products aren't the right fit, get in touch with the ECL team. We'd be happy to discuss the options.
